An 18-year-old from Black River Falls is facing several charges after La Crosse police say he was intoxicated when he crashed his car off Bliss Road, near the first landing, on Saturday night.

Cody Sanchez told police he and some friends had been drinking and smoking marijuana in his car in Black River Falls when they got bored and wanted to go to Grandad Bluff because they had never been there before.

La Crosse County Dispatch got two calls from witnesses who said the car went off the road and hit a tree. On Star, which also reported the incident, recorded the car was going 34 mph when it crashed. Sanchez told police he was driving up Bliss Road when his car began to swerve, he "freaked out" and suddenly crashed.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, Sanchez was injured and on the ground. Police say the rear passenger had kicked out a window to get out and the front passenger got our through the sunroof before helping Sanchez get out through the sunroof.

Police say when they were helping Sanchez, they could smell alcohol and burned marijuana. Police also found an open beer in the car and 2.9 grams of marijuana on Sanchez. He was transported to a local hospital and was arrested there. Sanchez was later released and taken into custody.

On Monday, Sanchez was charged with operating while intoxicated causing injury; possession of tetrahydrocannabinols (THC); and two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping.
