DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- For the first time, the winner of the Iowa State Fair's Big Boar contest isn't from Iowa.
Reggie, a hog raised near Austin, Ind., earned the honor Thursday on the opening day of the state fair in Des Moines.
The Des Moines Register reports Reggie weighed in at 1,335 pounds, topping the heftiest Iowa hog. That was Buddy, a Postville hog that weighed 1,128 pounds. Third place went to Fred Hoiboar, a 1,079-pound hog named after Iowa State University basketball coach Fred Hoiberg.
Swine Barn manager Ernie Barnes says he doesn't mind that a hog from outside Iowa won the 37-year-old competition.
Reggie's owner, Rick Stockdale, noted Iowa's status as the nation's top hog producer, saying "It's a thrill and an honor to win in the capital of hogs."
