TOMAH, Wis. -

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says one person is dead after a three vehicle crash about 8:00 a.m. Friday in Monroe County.

A grass fire nearby sent thick smoke over Highway 173, reducing visibility to 20 feet in some areas.

A vehicle driven by 61-year-old Suzanne Becker swerved to miss a vehicle, then ran into the back of another vehicle driven by 34-year-old Melisaa Mundo.

Becker and Mundo exited their vehicles after the crash. A third vehicle, driven by 57-year-old David Peiper, ran into the back of Becker's vehicle, pushing it into both Becker and Mundo.

Mundo died at the scene from her injuries.

Becker was sent by ambulance to Tomah Memorial Hospital, and later flown to a hospital in Marshfield with potentially life threatening injuries.

Peiper sustained minor injuries.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation closed State Highway 173 from State Highway 21 to State Highway 80, northeast of Tomah.

Cranfest in Warrens started Friday and is located 8 miles northwest of the grass fire and crashes.
