Grace period to license pets ending soon
The clock is ticking for pet owners to get a license or renew their existing one.
By next Monday, all dogs older than five months and cats in certain municipalities must be registered. It's a state requirement for all dogs.
The deadline passed in January, but a grace period ends April first.
A humane officer says it's a really simple process especially to avoid a $25 late fee or a $250 ticket. "Come to the humane society, your treasurer, or city hall, and bring a current copy of your rabies vaccine and your driver's license, and you can also call to see what forms of payment and how much it will be depending on your municipality," said humane officer Eric VanOsdal.
At the humane society, it's $11 for a fixed pet and $21 for one that is not fixed.
