Free-speech lawsuit filed against Iowa college
A student has sued Des Moines Area Community College, saying the school's policies on leafleting are hindering his right to free speech.
The Des Moines Register reports that Jacob Dagel alleges in his lawsuit filed Monday in Des Moines that the college rules prevent him from expressing his political views.
Dagel says a campus security official barred him from handing out fliers on March 28. The fliers criticize college officials' decision to subsidize student tickets to an April 3 anti-bullying conference.
The lawsuit says the college policy limits leafleting to a "Speech Zone" and requires advance review of any information to be distributed.
College President Rob Denson says he's confident the campus is not impinging on constitutional freedoms.
