ELROY, Wis. -

For many communities in our area, high school football becomes a weekly tradition this Friday night.

However, some schools got an early start and kicked off their season on Thursday. That includes Royall High School in Elroy.

Thursday night was about more than just the new season; the players took to Gerard Brunner Field under the lights for the first time.

“First year home game under the lights, and it all came together,” said Clay Retzlaff, senior wide receiver at Royall, “It’s great to be here playing.”

Thanks to a $360,000 donation from Ron Brunner, everything on the field was new, including the Panther’s jerseys.

Brunner, an alumnus at Royall, did it as a way to honor his late brother. “It definitely feels great, you can’t beat a new field, new jerseys, this is perfect,” said Christian Moore, senior running back for the Panthers.

The Panthers celebrated a victory on the new field tonight, beating Riverdale 20-6.
