FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. -

Firefighters are investigating a wildfire that burned into the early hours Tuesday morning in Buffalo County.

It was reported about 4 p.m. Monday in the town of Milton. That's just a few miles north of Fountain City, along the Mississippi River.

The fire started near Waumandee Creek Road.

Officials say the dry, windy conditions made it difficult to contain the blaze. Crews began making a firebreak to try and cut off the flames around 11 p.m. on Monday night.

They gained control of the fire and cleared the scene just after midnight.

Residents of at least one home were evacuated.

Buffalo County Chief Deputy Colin Severson says it was an "extremely large fire" but he could not estimate how many acres of land have burned.

The Fountain City Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Tri-Community Fire Department and the Arcadia Fire Department.
