MADISON, Wis. -

A three-alarm fire in the University of Wisconsin Medical Sciences Center at 1300 University Avenue has been extinguished, according to Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth.

The fire was reported after 8 a.m. this morning when fire was spotted on the roof of the building.

An investigation found the source of the fire on the fourth floor of the building, according to Wirth. She said crews are now using thermal imaging cameras to make sure the fire didn't spread.

Wirth said extra crews were called in to assist because of the age of the building. She said sprinklers had activated in the building.

Students, staff and one animal were evacuated, according to Wirth. She said there are other animals in the building but they are unharmed.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Traffic on University Avenue is affected by the fire response.

Fire crews are expected to remain on scene until at least 10:15 a.m.
