The La Crosse Fire Department is reminding residents that their fire pit permits are up for renewal.
The permits are good January 1 through December 31. In 2012, the first year they were available, 1,100 permits were sold.
Along with allowing residents to burn on their property, the permits also come with a set of safety tips and rules so people burn safely. The permit program has been a benefit for the fire department.
"We actually got less calls now that everybody kind of knows what you can and can't do, where in the previous years every neighbor, if they saw you burning something they'd just call and then we'd have to put it out but at least now you know what you can and can't do," said Lieutenant Bee Xiong of the La Crosse Fire Department.
The permits are $20 and can be purchased at city hall or the La Crosse Fire Station #1, 726 5th Ave. S.
