ONALASKA, Wis. -

A fire Wednesday night forced the evacuation of an apartment building for people with disabilities in Onalaska.

One of the residents pushed their emergency alert button after noticing smoke in their unit on the 1100 block of Wilson Street.

When authorities arrived on scene, they could see smoke and immediately began helping with an evacuation.

Tri-State Ambulance says one man was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The damage was contained to the apartment where the fire started. Firefighters were able to ventilate the building, so residents in other apartments were able to go back in. A cause is still under investigation.
