It is Fire Prevention Week, and the La Crosse Fire Department wants you to keep some things in mind.

This year the fire department is focusing on smoke detectors. For instance, did you know smoke detectors have an expiration date?

Officials say you should regularly replace the detector itself about every ten years.

"What's nice now is they make lithium-ion, sealed units that are designed to last for ten years. So you never have to replace batteries, you just replace the detector, and when it starts chirping it's hit the end of its functional life and you just replace them, and the nice thing is you don't have to change the batteries,” said La Crosse Fire Department Lieutenant Steven Cash

With the temperatures falling, officials say you should be checking any heating devices like chimneys and space heaters for damage.
