MADISON, Wis. -

A federal judge has ordered the release of Brendan Dassey, according to court documents.

The judge outline several conditions for Dassey’s release, including that he can only travel in the court’s eastern district of Wisconsin, not obtain a passport, not possess a gun, any other weapons or any controlled substances, WTMJ in Milwaukee reported.

Dassey has also been ordered not to have any contact with Steven Avery or the family of Teresa Halback.

State Department of Corrections officials said they are currently reviewing the judge's order.

Earlier this year, a judge ruled that Dassey's conviction should be thrown out. The state has appealed that ruling, and Dassey's conviction could be reinstated by the state either winning that appeal or taking the case to a full retrial.
