The flat Iowa registration fee of $25 for all-electric cars might be replaced by the variable fees paid by owners of other vehicles.

The Gazette reports that the Iowa Transportation Department intends to ask state lawmakers to eliminate the flat fee in favor of the normal state fee based on weight and value of other passenger vehicles.

The department says there are 41 all-electric vehicles registered in Iowa. The department says that if the variable fee were assessed, it would cost the owner of a $36,000 Nissan Leaf about $366 to register the vehicle in Iowa.

The department's lobbyist, Elizabeth Baird, says a fee change bill was approved by the Legislature last year but was vetoed by Gov. Terry Branstad for unrelated reasons.
