Most people know the dangers of impaired driving .
but area doctors want you to know that includes more
than just driving under the influence.
This week is national Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.
Doctors at Gundersen Health System say drowsy driving
can be just as bad as drunk driving.
Research has shown that going 24 hours without sleep
has the same effect on the brain as drinking a six-pack
of beer in an hour .
or having a B-A-C of zero point one .
which is higher than the legal limit to drive.
Doctors recommend getting a good night's sleep before
long drives .
and being aware of when you're starting to nod off.
The thing with drowsy driving is there's no breathalyzer
for drowsy driving.
So it is important for people to be aware of those
signs of sleepiness.
Doctors say if you find yourself blinking or yawning
a lot while you're behind the wheel .
it's best to find a place to pull over to either walk
or take a quick nap.
