SUMNER, Iowa (AP) -

A school bus driver was ticketed after his bus ran into the back of another in northeast Iowa, causing more than 40 students to be sent to hospitals.

The Bremer County Sheriff's Office says 63-year-old Steven Crawford, of Fredericksburg, was cited for failure to maintain control of his bus Tuesday.

The crash occurred a little before 3:30 p.m. on a rural road near Sumner. Sumner-Fredericksburg School District Superintendent Rick Pederson says the impact from the trailing bus caused the other to go into a ditch.

Pederson says 43 students were taken to three hospitals. One of those students was to remain for overnight observation. Forty-six other students were checked at the scene and released to their parents.

The students range in age from 11 to 14.
