Director charged with failing to report allegation
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The director of an Iowa City neighborhood center is charged with failing to report allegations of child sexual abuse in a Head Start program that she oversees.
The Iowa City-Press Citizen says Sue Freeman-Murdah was arrested Wednesday. State officials say it's the first time in memory that someone has been charged under Iowa's mandatory reporting law.
As director of the Broadway Neighborhood Center, Freeman-Murdah is required to report allegations. Police say she didn't contact police or the state but conducted her own investigation when a mother thought her daughter was abused.
A spokesman for Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County says no evidence was discovered.
Freeman-Murdah pleaded not guilty to the simple misdemeanor Thursday. A telephone number for her is disconnected. No defense attorney is on the online court system.
