Crews clean streets in Cedar Rapids after ice jam
Crews continue to clean residential streets in Cedar Rapids after flooding from a major ice jam along the Cedar River.
City crews began cleaning debris off some streets late Thursday afternoon after the ice jam was cleared. More cleaning is expected Friday morning.
Built-up water from the ice jam caused a water surge Tuesday for the residential streets. Some were closed as workers pumped out water and placed sandbags in nearby homes.
Officials also plugged storm sewers and lowered internal flood gates from a nearby dam to alleviate the flooding.
Officials say ice jams are common, but recent rain and melting snow in the region made this a difficult case.
