Crews clean streets after ice jam
Crews continue to clean residential streets in Cedar Rapids after flooding from a major ice jam along the Cedar River.
City crews began cleaning debris off some streets late Thursday afternoon after the ice jam was cleared. More cleaning is expected Friday morning.
Water surged onto some residential streets on Tuesday. Some streets were closed as workers pumped away water and deployed sandbags. Officials also plugged storm sewers and lowered internal flood gates from a nearby dam to alleviate the flooding.
Officials say ice jams are common, but recent rain and melting snow in the region made this a difficult case.
