CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A judge will conduct a competency hearing for an 8-year-old child who may be called to testify in the murder trial of a Cedar Rapids man and his ex-girlfriend.

Zyriah Schlitter and Amy Jo Parmer of Hiawatha are charged in the death of Schlitter's 17-month-old daughter, Kamryn, in 2010.

The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports a judge granted a motion filed by Parmer's attorney to determine if the 8-year-old is competent to testify. The attorney says statements made by the child regarding Kamryn were made when he was 5 years old, and it's unknown what his recollection is now.

A hearing date isn't set.

Schlitter and Parmer are charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death. They will be tried together on May 29th.
