City Administrator Yes or no?

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- A group of supporters for a city administrator in La Crosse is taking a new approach to sway voters before they head to the polls.

A city administrator would take care of many of the day-to-day operations the mayor currently handles now.

The idea of a La Crosse city administrator has been brought up several times in the past.

But supporters of the position say the reason why it didn't go anywhere was because of the lack of education on what the position actually is and it's something they're trying to change this time around.

It's a different kind of push to get La Crosse to hire a city administrator.

"There wasn't any organization to get it out," said Dick Swantz. "There wasn't really any formal effort to to do that. This time around it appears there is."

Supporters of the position are launching Administrator Yes, a group focused on educating the public about what a city administrator is and what that person does. It's something they say was lacking in the past.

"Change is always difficult for any organization and so I don't know if people had all of the information they needed to make a good decision," said Glen Jenkins, spokesperson for Administrator Yes. "So hopefully we'll be able to provide that and teach all of the community members a little more about what a city administrator is and what their role will be in the community."

They're also working to launch a website providing voters with information on they need to know about the position.

"It's built around the notion that the more people know about this the more likely people are to vote for it," said Swantz.

Supporters say the city will operate more efficiently with an administrator and the position will save taxpayers money.

This is the third time council member Dick Swantz has brought up the idea in La Crosse and this time council member Chris Olsen is also on board.

"That's one of the things that we have heard that there's not enough information out there about a city administrator," said Olsen. "So we're trying to get the information out."

"Am I surprised not at all," said Dave Drews, president of Citizens for Responsible Government. "We will continue our opposition."

Drewes says La Crosse is operating just fine without a city administrator.

"I just don't see that there's any great benefit from it," said Drewes. "Things that are needed to get done get done."

So from now until people head to the polls, both sides will be working to sway the voters.

"Challenges to anything are fair," said Drewes. "Let the voters decide what they want to do."

Both groups are planning mail out fliers supporting their position. Administrator yes is also planning to speak at different events to educate voters on the city administrator position.

Wisconsin's Presidential Primary on April 3 is when voters will decide whether the city should hire an administrator.
