LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The La Crosse Chamber of Commerce has voiced its support for a proposal to hire a city administrator.
The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted on the issue Tuesday. Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Dyanne Brudos says board members have been educating themselves on the issue by talking to businesses and community members, and by holding a forum with the La Crosse Area Development Corporation.
The City of La Crosse has been operating under the mayor/council government structure since the 1800's, but the Chamber says as the city budget nears $75 million and "the world becomes more complex," hiring a trained professional for budgeting, policy management and strategic vision is an opportunity for growth and change in La Crosse.
"We've got great people in the city right now, the council and the mayor are good people and they're doing a good job," Brudos says, "But you can always take it to another level, you can always be better."
A referendum on the April 3 ballot in La Crosse asks voters whether an office of city administrator should be created, while duties for the Mayor's office would be removed.
