Cedar Rapids is considering a new city ordinance that will get tough on bad landlords and tenants.
The Gazette reports the City Council will meet Tuesday to discuss ways to identify and punish nuisance rental properties.
The proposed ordinance would create a database of property violations that will alert tenants and homeowners of problems. The city also would hire someone to handle the nuisance violations and ways to solve them.
The newspaper reports a property can be labeled a nuisance if a serious crime occurs at or near the property, as well as repeated health code violations.
Some landlords say the ordinance places the burden on the property owner and not on the tenant. Others say proposed fees in the ordinance would be illegal taxes.
