LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Cat over-population is a serious problem in our community, according to the Coulee Region Humane Society.  It's also a problem for the shelter itself.

New grants are being put toward easing that problem.  The Humane Society now has $10,000 to spay and neuter 200 cats over the next year-and-a-half or so.

They say a spayed or neutered cat is more likely to be adopted.  "Adoption rates equate to lives saved.  And we have this wonderful opportunity due to some very generous groups of people to help us do that.  Now again, we need our community to step forward and find homes for these cats that are so deserving of them," says Coulee Region Humane Society Executive Director Heather Schmid.

In the next year, the Humane Society hopes to find homes for more-than 100 more cats than they planned-on for their annual goal.
