OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) -

Two retired teachers hope their efforts to install a 3-foot-tall bulldog statue at an Ottumwa school will give a boost to students, teachers and parents.

The Ottumwa Courier reports the statue at Evans Middle School was placed so quickly, that some students were surprised to suddenly see their school mascot at a main entryway. The bulldog seems especially imposing because he stares down from a 6-foot-tall pedestal.

Retired teachers Larry Northup and John Sodey were behind the effort.

They covered the $4,500 expense of creating and shipping the sculpture from South Carolina with money left over from a travel fund. The teachers were known for taking Evans students on out-of-state science trips.

It cost another $4,000 for brickwork and other improvements.
