Bangor passes resolution calling for permanent fix to post office closure
BANGOR, Wis. -- Officials in Bangor say it's unacceptable how the U.S. Postal Service is handling the closing of the village's post office. It was closed earlier this month because of mold concerns.
Bangor officials blame the U.S. Postal Service for the closure saying it didn't take the right steps to make sure the building's issues with water leaking in were resolved.
Monday night, village board members approved a resolution calling for the U.S. Postal Service to come up with a permanent fix. In the resolution, those fixes could include figuring out how to keep using the same building, finding a different building to house the post office or locating a mobile unit within village limits to handle post office business.
The village board president says this is their way of working to keep postal service continuing in Bangor. "Hopefully the resolution is just going to protect us, to some extent, to keep them from closing the post office. Let them know we're against it, and we're going to fight tooth and nail to keep it here," says Village Board President Greg Peterson.
The resolution also say it's unacceptable that people who had post office boxes in Bangor now have to drive to West Salem to get their mail. The resolution approved Monday night recommends immediately installing temporary indoor P.O. boxes within the village limits at the expense of the U.S. Postal Service.
Our attempts to contact the postal service were unsuccessful.
