LA CROSSE, Wis. -

With the winter temperatures here to stay, it's a good time to make sure your water pipes are safe.

Every year in La Crosse, city officials report a handful of incidents where frozen pipes burst in a home, though none have been reported yet.

Usually they are in places where people spend the least amount of time and aren't adequately heated like basements and garages.

"Locations that are open to the outside, obviously close those up, insulating where there could be potential problems. The other thing we sometimes see would be if someone has an outside hose bib where the water is still on, it's not unusual for us to get a phone call from a neighbor saying there's water spraying all over the place," said La Crosse's Water Utility Director Mark Johnson.

Officials suggest if you need to thaw frozen pipes, use a hair dryer or a portable heater. They say never use a torch or open flame.
