Authorities have identified a man who died in a backhoe accident near Mount Vernon in eastern Iowa.

Authorities tell The Gazette in Cedar Rapids that 31-year-old Justin Steenhard, of Elma, died in the accident. The Linn County sheriff's office says Steenhard was operating the backhoe along a road that's under construction when it tipped over in a ditch on Monday. Steenhard was trapped beneath it.

Construction workers were trying to help Steenhard when emergency crews arrived, but he died at the scene.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
