A 54-year-old hunter from rural Black River Falls died after his ATV overturned and fell on him Friday morning in Franklin Township.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Marvin Waldsmith was operating an ATV while out deer hunting with his young son in a wooded area located at W15109 CTH-G in Franklin Township. When they tried to climb a steep hill on a ridge toward a deer stand, the ATV drove over a log in the wooded path and started to tip backwards.

Waldsmith’s son was able to jump away from the ATV as it overturned, but it pinned his father beneath it. He told his son to go for help.  Authorities report friends and family called for emergency services, but when they returned to the crash site, it appeared that the weight of the overturned ATV was too much for Waldsmith to continue breathing.

After being removed from the woods by rescue personnel, Waldsmith was pronounced dead by the Jackson County Coroner.
