Area county declares 'Fair Housing Week'
Eau Claire County has declared the week of April 8-12 as "Fair Housing Week" to show that everyone is entitled to an equal opportunity for housing.
The Eau Claire County Housing Authority says the county’s Fair Housing Ordinance is in place so people can have an equal housing opportunity "regardless of their sex, race, color, sexual orientation, disability, religion, national origin, marital status, family status, lawful source of income, age, or ancestry."
The county says the most common forms of discrimination occur when people are renting, buying, or getting financial assistance to pay for the home or insurance. The housing authority says the county’s ordinance also "protects renters from landlords who may treat them unfairly compared to other tenants."
If you think you’ve been treated unfairly while looking for housing in Eau Claire County, you’re encouraged to contact Eau Claire County Fair Housing Officer Kay Hestekin at (715) 839-6240.
