An elderly woman died in a fire in a four-unit apartment in Loganville Thursday morning, according to the Loganville Fire Department.
The family of the victim told WISC-TV the woman was 70 years old and lived in the apartment by herself for the last 7 years.
Fire chief Kent Westphal said the building on Main Street was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived after 8 a.m. Five volunteer fire departments were called to assist.
Fire officials said there was a report of a woman inside the building, and they entered the building twice to find the woman.
The woman died on the way to the hospital, according to fire officials.
Westphal said neighboring buildings were saved.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but fire officials said the fire started in the victim's apartment.
As of 11:45 a.m., fire crews were still at the scene battling flames and conducting demolition work.
Officials have blocked traffic in both directions on State Highway 23 at State Highway 154 because of the fire.
