Adair man claims $1 million Powerball prize
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- An Adair man who's been visiting his 95-year-old mother in the hospital after she took a fall has won a $1 million Powerball prize.
The Iowa Lottery says 58-year-old Steve Petty matched the first five numbers in Saturday's drawing. He claimed the prize on Monday.
Officials say Petty and his siblings are taking turns staying with their mother at a hospital in Guthrie Center. Petty stopped at a local Casey's to get a pizza on Saturday and bought three Powerball tickets. One of them was the big winner.
Petty, who's a tax preparer, says he plans to spend the money wisely. After state and federal taxes, he'll get $700,000.
