A man was crushed to death in Italy after a giant crucifix honoring Pope John Paul II somehow came loose and fell on him during a ceremony.

The 98-foot wooden and concrete cross fell while Pope John Paul II was being honored in the Italian village of Cevo, ITV.com reported.

Popes John Paul II and John XXIII are slated to become saints on Sunday at a twin canonization, a very big event in the 2,000-year history of the church.

The cross in Cevo was dedicated to John Paul II on his visit to the region in 1998.
