LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Ninety-three World War II and Korean War veterans from the tri-state area boarded a Freedom Honor Flight early Saturday morning to see the war memorials in Washington, D.C.

The public will welcome veterans home Saturday night at the Colgan Air hanger number 4 at the La Crosse Regional Airport. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the flight is expected to arrive at about 10:30 p.m.

“The significance of this trip without question is they’re going with fellow veterans—ladies and gentlemen who understand what they’ve been through and share a common bond,” said Freedom Honor Flight President Bill Hoel.

Most of the veterans on the Honor Flight were going to Washington, D.C. for the first time. They were scheduled to stop at the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the Air Force Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Women’s Memorial, the US Marine Corps War Memorial.

“To see the memorials the country has put up is pretty special,” Hoel said, adding that the veterans receive special treatment while in Washington, D.C.

“Strangers see the shirts they’re wearing and they’ll come up and say thank you for their service,” Hoel said. “They may also meet veterans from other honor flights.”

This is the 13th trip for the Freedom Honor Flight. Flights go to Washington, D.C. in spring and fall. If you or a veteran you know would like to go on an Honor Flight, visit www.freedomhonorflight.org.
