The Interstate 90-94 Challenge has state patrol agencies
from Massachusetts to Washington-state, teaming up
to make your drive a little safer.
The challenge began Friday and runs through Monday...
Today, News 8's Kyle Dimke rode along with a state
trooper, to see what exactly the Wisconsin State Patrol
is doing, in its attempt to achieve zero deaths on
He joins us now with more.
Officers say August is the deadliest month out of
the year on Wisconsin roads.
For the past 5 years, an average of 62 people have
died in car accidents in this month.
The Wisconsin State Patrol.
along with 14 other states across the country.
want to reduce the number of car accident fatalities
by 15 percent.
This weekend the 90/94 challenge is truely going to
be a challenge.

Trooper Tom Campbell has been with the Wisconsin State
Patrol for 6 years.
Saturday afternoon he and four or five other troopers
are out looking for speeding drivers.
TC: 8- speed will cause accidents.
NATS: do you know why I pulled you over?
TC: 1- Today we conducted a laser detail on I-90 at
mile post 12 in West Salem.
It's part of the Interstate 90/94 Challenge
With added enforcement this weekend for the 90/94
the Wisconsin State Patrol is putting in some overtime
to make sure drivers are slowing down.
TC: 5- the big things we're looking for when we're
out here is speed, alcohol, seat belts and distracted
Trooper Campbell says by doing this type of extra
enforcement drivers see the added patrol.
and know it's time to slow down.
TC: 7- We can't stop and make contact with everybody
that is speeding, but that one person that we make
contact with other people driving by us will have
that visual in the back of their minds I need to slow
down, I need to pay attention
Wisconsin State Patrol says the amount of traffic
increases in August.
and so does the amount of road construction.
TC: 8- People get slowed down by the construction
zones and feel that they may have to pick up their
speeds to get to their next destination a little bit
faster after they got slowed down.
And speed will cause accidents.
Trooper Campbell says if you're going to be driving
watch you speed and give yourself some extra time.
The State Patrol isn't looking to write more tickets
they're trying to enforce the law.

Trooper Campbell says he was a bit surprised by the
number of people that were pulled over today during
the laser detail.
In just a few hours there were about 25 people over.
