When you think
of America's Dairyland...cheese curds...milk...and
the packers...are often the first things that come
but what about shrimp?
A Westby man has opened Wisconsin's first indoor shrimp
News 8's Brittany Schmidt joins us now with more....
Mike and Lisa,
Right now, about 90-percent of the shrimp consumed
in the U.S.
comes from overseas...
but one man in Westby says as long as you have the
right equipment, supplies and knowledge...you can
pretty much raise shrimp anywhere...including Wisconsin.
Forbes Adam has never had a fish...
- even a gold fish,
By trade, Forbes is an excavating contractor...
but it seems tides have changed...
between the price of fuel and competition and the
price of everything going up, insurance and labor
and the cost to fix equipment, i decided i had enough
of those headaches.
Now he's swimming in another direction...
NAT POP --woo there they go.
and it's all thanks to an article his mother sent
as soon as I saw the article i knew.
that's a great idea, I never heard of raising shrimp
It's probably because America's Dairyland is known
for cheese curds and milk...not shrimp...
but that didn't stop Forbes from diving in...head
Come on guys, here's one,
He purchased 4 large swimming pools, filled them with
about 32-hundred gallons of water and just added shrimp.
I have two pumps that blow air into the tanks to airrate
I have seven stones in each tank, they are called
air stones, just air coming out of it and it airrates
Every morning Forbes tests the water for PH, ammonia
It just gives you a reading and then for each tank
I write it down and monitor it.
Then he feeds the shrimp...3 times a day
They come up and grab a few and then they go away
Forbes may be only getting his feet wet right now,
but this is definitey a deep end he didn't expect
to jump into.
Who ever reads a crystal ball, if they would have
told me that I was going to be raising shrimp in the
next year or two, I would have thought they were crazy
or way off.
In Westby, Brittany Schmidt, News 8
In the future, Forbes hopes to add about 12 more pools
of shrimp to his business so that he can sell shrimp
every month and keep up with the high demand.
