In today's Hands on Gardening, we'll take a look at
pesticides for your garden and tell you about some
important information you should look for on the label.
First, certain language on the label can show just
how toxic a particular pesticide is.
Typically, the word Danger signifies pesticides with
the highest toxicity, followed by "Warning" and "Caution"
being less toxic.
However, you should always be careful when handling
pesticides and wear the protective equipment recommended
on the label, such as safety glasses, rubber gloves,
or even a protective body suit if the pesticide is
Lastly, you should also be aware of a pesticide's
potential impact on the environment.
"Whether it be a synthetic or organic, remember they
are all targeted to kill or control a pest, whether
it be an insect, a weed, or a fungus that we might
have out there in our environment.
So, checking that label on not only how to use it
and the personal protective
equipment, but what environmental
impacts is it gonna have? Should we be using it near
water? Can it be used in sensitive areas that we have
maybe bees being kept, butterflies, these types of
insects so that we're not
taking out some of our beneficials
as well when we're using these different products."
