1899: Film director George Cukor, best known for directing movies such as "The Philadelphia Story," "Gaslight," "Adam's Rib," "Born Yesterday," "A Star Is Born" and "My Fair Lady," is born in New York City. Cukor won an Academy Award for Best Director for "My Fair Lady" and was nominated another four times in his career.
