1820: American pioneer, explorer, and frontiersman Daniel Boone, whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United States, dies of natural causes at age 85 in Defiance, Mo. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now Kentucky.
