1933: Ring Lardner, a sports columnist and short story writer best known for his satirical takes on the sports world, marriage and the theater, dies of complications from tuberculosis at age 48 in East Hampton, N.Y. Lardner was also the father of Ring Lardner Jr., the Oscar-winning screenwriter of such films as "Laura," "Woman of the Year" and "M*A*S*H."
