1968: Singer, musician, and radio and TV personality Red Foley, who was one of the biggest stars of country music after World War II, selling more than 25 million records, dies of respiratory failure at age 58 in Fort Wayne, Ind. A Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and a Grand Ole Opry veteran until his death, his 1951 hit "Peace in the Valley," was among the first million-selling gospel records.
