1901: Anarchist Leon Czolgosz shoots and fatally wounds U.S. President William McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. McKinley would die eight days later on Sept. 14. Czolgosz was executed by electric chair on Oct. 29, 1901, just 45 days after McKinley's death.
