1998: Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa, considered one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, dies of stroke at age 88 in Tokyo, Japan. Some of Kurosawa's best known films include "Rashomon," "Ikiru," "Seven Samurai" and "Yojimbo."
