SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) -

Crews have pulled a body from the charred ruins of a house fire in Superior.

The fire was reported just after 11 a.m. Monday. The Superior Fire Department says flames were coming out of the house when firefighters arrived, and fire and heat repeatedly thwarted efforts to search the home and attack the fire from the interior.

The body was removed from the fire debris in mid-afternoon.

The woman who lives in the home, whose car is parked in the driveway, is missing. A family member tells WDIO-TV the missing woman is a 78-year-old retired teacher.

Battalion Chief Vern Johnson says the fire apparently had been burning unnoticed for some time before it was reported.
