1848: Wyatt Earp, an Old West law officer best known for his part in the 1881 gunfight at the O.K. Corral, is born in Monmouth, Ill. Earp was a city policeman in Wichita, Kan., and Dodge City, Kan., before becoming a deputy sheriff and deputy U.S. marshal in Tombstone, Ariz.
