1888: John Foster Dulles, who served as U.S. secretary of state under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959 and was a significant figure in the early Cold War era, is born in Washington, D.C. The Washington Dulles International Airport, located in Dulles, Va., is named in his honor. He's seen here with Eisenhower in 1956.
