1944: Film director Jonathan Demme, best known for directing 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs," which won him the Academy Award for Best Director, is born in Baldwin, N.Y. Demme is also known for directing "Philadelphia," "Rachel Getting Married" and the Talking Heads concert movie "Stop Making Sense."
