1980: In what would be called the "Miracle on Ice," the United States hockey team defeats the heavily favored Soviet Union hockey team 4-3 in the medal round at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. The team, made up of amateur and collegiate players and led by coach Herb Brooks, would go on to win the gold medal after beating Finland two days.
