1934: Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Russell, who won 11 NBA championships during his 13-year career with the Boston Celtics, is born in Monroe, La. The five-time NBA MVP and 12-time All-Star also led the University of San Francisco to two consecutive NCAA championships (1955, 1956) and won a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics as captain of Team USA.
