2012: The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirms a U.S. District Court judge's ruling that California's Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The panel also continued a stay on the earlier ruling, barring any marriages from taking place pending further appeals. The case is now before the U.S. Supreme Court, which is expected to make a ruling in the summer of 2013.
