1992: Hugo Chávez leads an unsuccessful coup d'état by the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200 against Venezuelan President Carlos Andrés Pérez. Chavez was imprisoned for the coup attempt. When he was released after two years, he founded a social democratic political party, the Fifth Republic Movement, and was elected president of Venezuela in 1998, a position he still holds today.
